If you have been following my work for any period of time, you may be familiar with my origin story:
I was the last of three kids with a significant age gap. When I passed through menarche it was mostly just me and my mum. At the same time she began a long, bumpy road into perimenopause.
We were both grumpy. Hot flashes meant we fought over the windows being up vs down in the dead of winter. But where my period was a thing that after the initial shock, I barely took note of, my mum was experiencing disruptive flooding bleeds. There were so many symptoms and they lasted over a decade.
The only thing on offer was HRT and we watched a close friend of hers die from an aggressive breast cancer diagnosis after taking HRT. It was off the table for my mum. So she instead got to be pummelled in the limbo before menopause.
The seed was planted: there must be holistic ways to support perimenopause. And this massive transition that females (lucky enough to live past 40) will all experience, couldn’t remain this taboo, humiliating experience we talk about in hushed voices and weird metaphors.
Perimenopause remains central to my practice. Like death is the accompaniment to life. Dark is to light. Menopause is to menarche.
So anytime I am working with a client on anything menstrual or reproductive, perimenopause is on my mind and probably slipping off my lips.
Alas, 25 years later, on the eve of my own perimenopause, I’m here: offering this little gathering to talk about it, to honour and hold it, to understand it, and to actually provide tailored therapies live to support it.
